My wife and I travel extensively, and on our latest adventure we decided to start highlighting some of the wonderful local businesses we come across along the way. This trip took us to the heel of Italy — the sun-kissed region of Puglia — starting in Bari and continuing through Monopoli, Lecce, Polignano a Mare, and several other charming towns along the Adriatic coast.

Given our full itinerary — including a cooking class, a cheese-making experience, and a few spontaneous countryside excursions — we needed a reliable vehicle. Although we generally avoid driving in certain countries, this trip called for the freedom to explore.

Like most travelers, we first checked the usual international car rental agencies — Europcar, Avis, Budget, Hertz — but found high prices, long queues, and impersonal service. That’s when we came across a family-owned rental company in Bari called Bari Noleggi. Their rates were nearly half of the big names, and their communication was immediate and friendly. We decided to take a chance — and we’re so glad we did.

From the first message, the team at Bari Noleggi was attentive and professional. Upon arrival, we learned that they operate just outside the airport due to the long and bureaucratic process of gaining access inside. Within five minutes of our call, one of the sisters arrived with our car at the parking area across from the departure terminal. When I mentioned the vehicle didn’t have the navigation system I’d requested, she promptly called her sister, and within minutes another car arrived, perfectly equipped and spotless.

The experience from start to finish was exceptional. The ladies were always reachable via WhatsApp, courteous, and accommodating. The return was smooth, and within a day our damage deposit was refunded without any issues.

I don’t often make personal recommendations, but this one is well deserved. If you’re planning to travel through southern Italy and find yourself in the Bari area, skip the big rental chains and support this local business run by two amazing women. You’ll get great value, personal service, and the satisfaction of helping a family company thrive.
